Employment Opportunity - Naturalist Sea Kayak and ...
Shanna Gachen
Naturalist Sea Kayak and Glacier Guide, Anadyr Adventures, Valdez, Alaska

Company: Established in 1989, Anadyr Adventures offers naturalist guided seakayaking
and hiking trips to novice and experienced kayakers, families, kids and the
physically challenged. We are a company dedicated to sharing the beauty of Prince
William Sound wilderness and our love of kayaking with our guests. Our groups are
small, our impact is low and sustainable tourism is in the forefront of our agenda. Valdez
has been our home since 1984. Through the years we have kayaked, sailed and hiked
Prince William Sound extensively.

Area: Valdez is at the end of the Richardson Highway, making it a destination town.
Within miles of town, one can find climbing, skiing, whitewater, hiking, biking, and
fishing. Valdez is a coastal town with a temperate environment. Summers can be cool,
around 50-60 degree highs, and wet. Closer to the giant tidewater glaciers the
temperature may fall to 30 degrees or lower. Please be prepared with proper clothing,
although equipment can be pro-dealed upon arrival.

Naturalist Guide: We offer everything from ½ day to 10 day camping trips. Our most
popular options are day trips to Shoup (8 hours) or Columbia Glaciers (10 hours). We
also offer a combination kayak/glacier hike on the local Valdez Glacier day trip (6
hours). Guides also have the chance to lead or assist on overnight trips ranging from 1-10
days; either wilderness (camping), mother ship (yacht), or lodge based. Extended
wilderness/camping trips are either “guide assisted” with clients providing their own
camping equipment and food, or “fully guided” with Anadyr guides preparing meals and
outfitting the trip. Interpretation of natural history is a large part of all trips.

Qualifications: Although kayak experience is preferred it is not essential. Anadyr
Adventures spring training course, which is free to hired guides, gives beginning
kayakers all the skills needed to confidently lead trips. Applicants must be strongly
motivated to learn the local natural history. First Aid/CPR and drivers license required.

Benefits: pro-deal program, inexpensive onsite housing, job training, many outdoor rec
opportunities, and a chance to experience a unique corner of Alaska.

Pay: Per trip basis with an end of season bonus if contract is fulfilled, plus tips.

Dates: Applications accepted until positions are full. Orientation begins May 1. Season
Ends around the last day of September.

To Apply: Please email (subject: Application for Employment) one page cover letter,
resume and contact info. for three references to Scott Hocking at
