From the Prez

I want to thank all of the people who are working hard to lead this club. The Paddle Board meets once a month to manage club finances and dream-up opportunities for club membership. Jackie Brown, our Treasurer, manages the bank account, makes sure the bills are paid, and does not let the Prez anywhere near the club checkbook. Many instructors have just provided another excellent whitewater class and are preparing for Basic and Advanced sea classes. Andy Ryan’s vision for our web site and newsletter is taking shape. Our new Newsletter Editor, Brenna McVety, is a club member with a passion for paddling and already a marvel at managing stories and producing articles. The many pool coordinators are providing excellent opportunities for you to practice your skills in a warm and encouraging environment. The trip chairs and leaders have filled the calendar with many fine trips with more to come.
Please make sure to thank these people yourself and tell them all what a wonderful job they are doing. Buy them a beer, or a double caramel latte macchiato, whatever they want. Standing rib roasts and Sacher tortes also come to mind. Please consider helping out with the club yourself, you will find this to be richly rewarding. Above all, come out and paddle with us!
One way we spend your dues is on training for our instructors and leaders. These expenditures provide the club with highly skilled teachers and leaders who are eager to help you become great paddlers yourselves, and to provide a safe and fun adventure on the water. This year we had an instructor workshop on Orcas Island and a Leadership Class at Discovery Park, both taught by Shawna Franklin and Leon Somme of Body Boat Blade. An article in this month’s newsletter describes these classes, provides a behind-the-scenes look at club operations, and presents some matters related to club policy for consideration and comment.
