Swim for Life Needs Volunteers: August 20

Published on 7/4/2014

Welcome to Swim for Life 2014!

Imagine restarting an entire immune system, giving even the most leukemia-ravaged body a second chance at a healthy life.

It’s not wishful thinking or science fiction.  Bone marrow reboots your body so significantly, even your blood type can change to the donor’s blood type for life! And through the shared efforts of over ten million people on the Be The Match bone marrow donor registry, anyone today has a second chance at life.

The problem is the precise testing needed to sift through 30+ variables and find that one-in-a-million bone marrow match. It costs $100 to “tissue type” each potential match, and neither donors nor recipients can fund that. Funding has to drop in like magic money from community events like this one.

Swim for Life is an annual 2 1/4 mile, team-based swim across Lake Washington from Medina Beach Park to Madison Park. A team is four or fewer swimmers and a kayaker, so you always have a safety boat near you. The contributions of participants, donors, and sponsors help add people in our community to the life-saving registry, pay for tissue typing, and facilitate matches made with donors in our area.
