Spring Volunteer Opportunities at SJPT

Welcome, Spring!  

 

 

Spring volunteer opportunities are coming up! We hope you can join one of these activities. Apologies if you’ve already received this email – we wanted to make sure no one was left out.

 

As well as these activities, San Juan Preservation Trust summer volunteer events on Waldron, Stuart, Shaw and Henry Islands will be announced soon. Stay tuned!

 

SPRING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Weeds and Woodchips at Red Mill Farm Nursery

When: Wednesday, March 18, 12 – 2 pm.

What: Help the Salish Seeds Project grow with San Juan Preservation Trust & Land Bank staff.  We’ll be weeding native seed production beds and spreading woodchips. 

Where: Red Mill Farm, San Juan Island.  From Friday Harbor, head west out of town on San Juan Valley Road.  At approx. 3miles, turn left onto Valley Farms Road.  Take the first right into the farmhouse driveway.  Please pull up next to farmhouse and park well off driveway.

Bring: Gloves and your favorite weeding tool (optional).  We’ll have snacks and water available.

Spring Sowing at Driggs Park Nursery

When: Thursday, March 26, 12 – 2 pm.

WhatCelebrate spring!  We’ll be sowing native wildflower and grass seeds and doing nursery maintenance for the Salish Seeds Project. 

Where: Driggs Park Nursery (the Land Bank office, 328 Caines St. in Friday Harbor)

Bring: Gloves and reading glasses (some of these seeds are tiny!).  We’ll have snacks and water available.

Beach Clean Up on Lopez

When: April 18, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
WhatThe San Juan Preservation Trust is partnering with BLM on this 10th annual Earth Day event to clean up shorelines on south Lopez Island.

Where: Meet at Watmough Bay trailhead to receive your beach assignments, establish carpools and identify beach teams.

Bring: Dress for changing weather and bring day packs, water, lunches and snacks. We will provide gloves, trash bags and other supplies. Following the cleanup, we will gather the trash and beach litter, share interesting stories of treasures found, snap lots of photos and then mosey our way to the Lopez Dump. Please bring your smiles and great attitudes.

Salish Seeds Project Nursery Tour at Red Mill Farm

Sunday, May 3, 11 am – 12:00. See what’s happening there! Direction to the farm are above.

 

Late June – Seed Collectors training.  A number of you helped with wild seed collection last year, and we’d love your assistance again.   Let Eliza know if you’d like to join us again or for the first time.   A special training day will be scheduled for late June, probably on San Juan Island. eliza@rockisland.com 360-378-4402. Date TBD.
