On September 8th 4 intrepid sea kayak instructors joined a crew of WW instructors for a river trip on the Snoqualmie Powerhouse run.
Shown Left to Right: Chris (Sea), Ross, Barry (Sea), Jose (Sea), Matt, Mike (Sea), Arieal, Jon, John (blue), and Rick (behind John). Nicole behind the camera!
Some of the sea kayakers had a bit of river experience and some none. We brought boats and some gear for the sea kayakers. Even getting them outfitted was fun! Since they were instructors their strokes were good and they were pretty excited to do the river! We didn't spend a lot of time instructing but working on river skills like ferry and eddy turns, river features, dangers, and the differences in strokes and how they are used. Then we started working the river.
It didn't take long before they were ferrying well and catching smaller eddies. That was fun to see. We walked up around to see the Falls and many paddled up close. Nicole got some great photos of the crew running the upper class 3ish rapid. Fuuunn again!
We played the river pretty hard working eddies etc. Down at the nice surf wave these Sea folk got after it over and over again - enough to tire me out , for sure. They all did very well with some rides at least briefly. I think the timing and downstream tilt with upstream rudder was the hardest for them.
We spent 3 hours on that one mile of river. But again, these folks did super well; I, for sure, would boat with them again! I think all WW crew would say the same.
Below are some more of Nicole's pics.
