There is a dangerous log in the Whirlpool rapid of the Middle Sauk. It is in the right channel which most people run. The log is sticking out from the island (channel left) into the river. Over 6000cfs, they could float over the log, and over 10,000, they could boat down the right half of the channel. However, at 3700cfs on 12/29/2025, the right half of the channel was so rocky, the log was practically blocking the channel. I bumped down and portaged on the right.
I heard some people looked at it from the island on 1/1/2026. A photo is posted in the AW site (https://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/view/river-detail/2199/reports).
For now, we recommend all boaters to scout the rapid from the road (48°11'14.0"N 121°30'38.4"W) before the trip and possibly scoot down the left channel.
