Moonlight Madness

Moonlight Rising over the Green River (photo: Amy Simmons)

A flotilla of WKC members, led by  Kim Rader, ventured out to paddle the Yoyo section of the Green River under a full moon. The Yoyo is a class 2 run but the darkness made it interesting. You may think you know a run, but take away your ability to see and it's a whole new challenge. It was all about staying loose and reactive, since it was nearly impossible to see river features until you were upon them.

As the park closed at 6pm, Kim set up a timeline and logistics to make the trip work. We met at Flaming Geyser put-in at 5:00pm, which was also the time of moonrise. Sunset was 5:44pm. We dropped off boats and then moved cars to the take-out. Since Flaming Geyser closed at 6:00pm, shuttle drivers needed to park outside of the park and then walk 1.3 miles back in to the put-in to join the group.

Kim passed out glow sticks: one for each boat, one for each PFD, and an assortment of flexible glow rings which we used to decorate paddles, helmets and boats. We were lit up like Christmas trees! Most people had headlamps too, which supplemented the moonlight to illuminate the water.

We launched just before the park closed at 6:00 and then hung out in the first eddy until full dark. The full moon peaked through the trees and we howled and yipped at it. It felt spooky and ethereal and like a floating disco party all at the same time.

In retrospect, more of the brighter glow sticks would have been better - one for each bow and stern instead of one per boat - as well as a more secure way of attaching them such as zip ties. A few glow sticks got loose and although we could see them shining from the bottom of the river we had no way of retrieving them.

After the paddle, we had a howl-in at the take-out. We gathered around a propane fire pit and enjoyed hot dogs, potluck food and glow-in-the-dark spikeball. Great times!
