Tulalip Bay / Whidbey Is. Whale-Watching? Paddle

We are going to paddle from Tulalip Bay past Camano Head and Sandy Point to picnic lunch on driftwood on Whidbey Island's east shore.  Then we'll paddle around the south end of Hat Island and back to Tulalip Bay  If we spot Patch and his 45-foot-or-so buds along the way, we may vary our route and itinerary to say hi ... Patch is always glad to see us and visa versa.

Sign-up Requirements: This is an 11 nautical mile paddle in mostly open water; there is often wind and waves in this area, and a lot of "fetch" doesn't mean that the whales retrieve tennis balls for us.  To sign up for this paddle, you must be an intermediate or beyond paddler with wet-exit, re-entry and rescue skills, be able to paddle a sustained 2.5 knots pace, and be comfortable in waves to two feet.  Qualification questions will be sent to registrants whose paddling experience, gear and qualifications are not known from prior paddles.  Registrations without answers to the qualification questions may be deleted.

Immersion Gear: Wearing immersion gear (a wetsuit or a dry-suit over insulating clothing) is mandatory on this paddle.

Schedule and Itinerary:

9:30 a.m. - meet at the Tulalip Bay Access Beach, offload, and park right there.

10:00 a.m - launch and paddle ~5 n.m. to picnic lunch on driftwood on Whidbey Island.

~12:45 p.m. - launch from the lunch stop and paddle ~6 n.m. back to Tulalip Bay.

~ 3:00 p.m. - arrive back at Tulalip Bay, land, load-up, and head home.

Conditions and Contingency:   This paddle is contingent upon acceptable wind and weather conditions. If conditions are too rough for an open water paddle, a less exposed paddle in the Everett area may be substituted.

Equipment Requirements:  Kayak, paddle, pfd, paddlefloat, pump, sprayskirt, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and snacks, picnic lunch, warm hat, waterproof hat, VHF radio if you have one, immersion gear, and an extra change of warm clothes in a dry-bag.

Waiver and Indemnification: This is not a guided paddle nor a kayaking-skills lesson. In signing up for this paddle, each sign-up-ee certifies that he/she has the required kayaking skills and experience described in the "Sign-up Requirements".  Kayaking activities, and paddling amongst 45-foot-long marine mammals, have inherent risk and each sign-up-ee acknowledges that kayaking activities and paddling amongst whales have risk of injury or even death, and signs up and participates entirely and exclusively at his/her own risk.
