Waldron and/or Sucia and/or Patos Islands

Note: The date of this trip is still uncertain, due to other possible commitments and changing plans. It is almost certain that I will change the date somewhere in the range of Sept 25-30, which is also when currents are fast and can zip us from one island to the next.  The trip could involve camping 2-4 nights, and may include Stuart in our island bagging.  If we go for more than 2 nights then I intend to design it so weekenders can join in.  Look back at the end of July for a final decision and re-opening of the registration.  Contact me directly before then if you would like to join and let me know what interests you.

We will view the mysterious Waldron from up close.  Legends abound, including illegal crops and ornery residents with shot guns.  Perhaps the island is clothing optional.  Magnificent cliffs line the SE end.  Much of the rest is the nicest sandy beach in all the islands.  We can land on the S side where there is a San Juan Reservation Trust reserve.  we can also land on the N side, where nobody can see us.

There is a two mile crossing each way, and fast currents will be used to speed us around.  Very open water plus some wind can produce 2-3 foot waves which we will not necessarily avoid.  Total distance:13 nm.

There are two primary options on either end of the ambition spectrum, depending on your interest:
1) Go out Saturday, paddle around, then camp at Pt. Doughty that evening.  Circumnavigate Waldron and head for home Sunday.
2) Leave Friday and Paddle out to Sucia.  On Saturday explore N Sucia paddle out to Patos for camp #2 .  Circumnavigate Waldron starting from Patos with a 4 kt current ride.

We will need to make ferry reservations.
