The Teanaway River that is fed from the majestic Stuart Range. It‘s a beautiful class II+ run w/ cool sandstone slides that create some great surf / playspots. This run has class II / II+ rapids, but it REQUIRES class III skills do avoid A LOT of wood, huge trees, with not the greatest of eddies throughout. This is not a river for beginners! You must be confident with boat handling and know you can put your boat where you want it. There are also mandatory portages that will be made, it will be an adventure, but a beautiful one in the Teanaway River Valley. The plan for the day will be to stop and play on as many waves as we can. Many features will not have eddy service, so we will likely carry up short gravel bars to get multiple rides in at the nicer features. This will obviously add to the time we spend on the river. Even though this is only a ~7 mile run, expect us to be on the water for over 3 hours. Pack water, snacks or a lunch, and most importantly your playboat! Take out: Masterson Public Access in Cle Elum Put in: Above the confluence on the N. Fork.

15 years ago, on May 17th, we lost Mike Stano, a good friend and valued member of the WKC and paddling community. Let‘s meet mid/late afternoon and celebrate Mike by paddling the upper gorge. Afterwards we’ll hang at Paradise to reminisce and swap stories, so bring your favorite snacks and beverage of choice. Didn’t know Mike? Doesn’t matter – he’d want you there anyway! Note: This is a social paddle for any/all to celebrate Mike, and not a guided or "lead" trip down the Green.

Let’s spend later afternoon and evening at Fall into the Wall (FITW), our local “Disney Land / putt-putt golf course” creek run located at the crest of Snoqualmie Pass. Never done it? Are you confident paddling our local go-to class IV runs such as the NF Sky, upper Green gorge, Peshastin Creek? Do you lap Boulder Drop…? And while on these class IV runs, do you push yourself to make harder moves? If you paddle solidly, in control, and make harder moves on those type of runs (we’re not talking just making it through upright…), maybe you want to step it up a notch and experience some steeper gradient? If so, FITW might be just the ticket. I’m happy to go slow, scout, and help break down the run into easier-to-digest bits and pieces. And since it’s a short run, we’ll be doing multiple laps so you can always observe a lap from shore to see how it’s done. Just be aware – this is a “social”, so I should not be considered a guide or “trip leader”, nor will I always be right there for a rescue. But I’ll do what I can. I’m just coordinating a fun social evening of great paddling. After our laps we can hang out to swap stories over snacks and beverage of choice. A request… Please be flexible with the date, as water level is key. This date – June 9th – is our target date. June 16th is a backup option in case water levels do not cooperate June 9th. If levels don‘t cooperate for June 9th, I‘ll cancel the June 9th trip and create a trip for June 16th.

Have our recent low-water Octobers bummed you out? Here’s a hint – the ocean is never too low. And if you’ve never tried ocean surfing in your river kayak, you’re missing out! Hobuck has a nice long beach where one can almost always find friendly waves. And even if the glassies aren’t working great, the “soup zone” is a perfect place to practice your side surfing before you really need – or want – it on a river! And I’m happy to provide pointers & tips to get you started. Plus, Hobuck has great, laidback camping with some amenities (showers, bathroom, etc.). Or if you’re feeling less rustic, there are cabins you can rent (the ones in the campground will be closer to those of us camping). My plan is to be there Fri-Sun, but feel free to join whenever. I’ve set each day up as its own trip, so if you feel so inclined, sign up for the days you plan to join. Or if that’s too complicated, just pick one… For you sea kayakers who clicked on this link thinking this might be a sea kayak event… I’ll be surfing in river and surf kayaks and working with those in similar boats. But you’re more than welcome to join in the fun!

Let’s spend the weekend exploring some of the amazing rivers on the Olympic Peninsula. Specifics are TBD until we have a read on levels for the weekend. But likely candidates include the Humptulips, Matheny, Wyncoochee, Calawah, Sitkum, and Sol Duc. Difficulty wise, we’ll try and stick with options that are mostly class III/III+ with the possible occasional class IV (that could hopefully be portaged if desired). I’ve created separate trips for both Saturday and Sunday, so assuming you’ll be joining both days please sign up for both. For those hoping to join only for Saturday, just sign up for that day. If you only want to join for Sunday, we’ll see if we can pick our location with confidence sometime by end-of-week. But that’s not always possible

My plan for this year is to step back from a formal itinerary and just coordinate this as a social weekend of paddling and camping at Matheny. Assuming levels cooperate, my (personal) plan is to hopefully paddle upper (IV) + middle (III) one day, and ½ middle (III) + lower (IV) the other day. But there are lots of options in the vicinity, both on Matheny itself as well as on the surrounding rivers - everything from class II (Queets), class III (middle Matheny), to class IV+ (V) (Sams). My expectation is that everyone will pick and choose their own adventure and coordinate with those that have similar interests and abilities. If you’re not sure if others signed up will have similar interests & abilities as you, feel free to let me know your expectations and I’ll happily help you partner up for something that should suit your needs. Or better yet, have your regular paddling posse sign up as well… I’m happy to provide guidance on options but won’t necessarily be there to show/guide you down the river. The adventure is all part of OP paddling! I’ve set each day up as its own trip, so if you feel so inclined, sign up for the days you plan to join. Or if that’s too complicated, just pick one…
